Boris Johnson has damaged his credibility in Wales by backing Dominic Cummings, our research shows

A large majority of the Welsh population believes Boris Johnson’s credibility as Prime Minister has been damaged by his backing of Dominic Cummings over the lockdown travel saga.

Our research found that nearly 7 in 10 people in Wales (68%) feel this way, while fewer than 1 in 10 (7%) think that Mr Johnson’s backing of his chief advisor and political strategist has increased the Prime Minister’s credibility. Around 2 in 10 feel that the episode has had no effect on his credibility.

Older people in Wales (aged 55+) are more likely than younger people (aged 16-34) to see the backing as damaging, as are women (71%) than men (66%). Those living in the Valleys (64%) were relatively less likely than those in other regions of Wales to feel this way.

The question ‘What effect, if any, do you believe Boris Johnson’s backing for Dominic Cummings has had on Mr Johnson’s credibility as Prime Minister?’ was placed on Beaufort’s June 2020 Omnibus survey. Fieldwork took place using an online panel between 10 and 22 June 2020. A total of 1,000 interviews with a representative sample of adults aged 16+ across Wales were completed and analysed.
